Periodontal Therapy

It is estimated that over half of adults thirty years of age and older suffer from some level of periodontitis or gum disease. Periodontitis is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults and without general dentistry, can put you at risk for other serious health conditions. Stroke, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and some cancers are examples of the conditions that are linked to periodontitis. At Rolling Hills Dentistry, we can help you fight periodontal disease and protect your oral and overall health with periodontal therapy.

Gum Infection Treatment

Gum Infection Treatment Periodontal disease starts as gingivitis or a low-level stage of gum infection. This begins when bacteria form plaque and tartar that is left in hard to clean areas of the mouth. Even daily brushing and flossing cannot always remove all plaque, leading to hidden spots of tartar. If not removed through professional teeth cleanings at the dentist, this can inflame and infect the gum tissue.

Treatment for gum infection includes deep cleanings to remove the source of irritation and infection. Tartar must be scraped away and the gum tissue must be treated for infection. Specialized mouthwash can be used as part of oral home care in combination with deep cleanings at our office.

Scaling and Root Planing

When gums become infected from periodontitis, they can recede and cause pockets between the teeth and gums. This allows more bacteria to grow below the gum line, leading to deeper levels of calculus or tartar. To remove this tartar to allow the gum tissue to heal and close the gaps between the teeth, scaling and root planing may be needed. This removes calculus from below the gum line, scaling off any tartar and planing the surface to a smooth finish. We also have dental laser technology that can remove diseased gum tissue and promote faster recovery for improved gum health.
